For a lot of rockstars that can be just as important as it is for a lot rappers to violent, rich, and "pussymonsters". And who can blame these musicians for going out of their way to just flat-out not giving a a shit? There's something inextricably tied between youth, blatant disregard of consequences, and rock music.
It's hard for me not to think about this when I consider the guys from Chicago who go by Smith Westerns and never fail to impress every time I see something with their name on it.
My first real introduction to them came when I saw them open for Girls on 6th street in Austin last year. They came on, played a pretty impressive set, then got absolutely wasted and stumbled back on stage in the middle of Girls' set with tambourines and shit. It was pretty awesome. I checked out their self-recorded first album, aptly named Smith Westerns, soon after. It's pretty incredible.
Their new single from their album Dye It Blonde (due out in February) is just as good if not better. Check out the video, it's one of my favorites right now. Something about me thinks that, "Weekends are never fun, unless you're around here too", taps into a sense of youth like no other lyric since Japandroids screamed "remember that night you were already in bed said, 'Fuck it' and got up to drink with me instead".
